Underspecification and the Semantics / Pragmatics Interface

چکیده

The notion of UNDERSPECIFICATION [17, 2, 21, 25] has been proposed as a possible solution to the problem of specifying a theory of the semantics / pragmatics interface—more specifically, of the process of identifying an interpretation in context—that is consistent with psychological, as well as linguistic evidence. The assumptions about the respective roles of semantics and pragmatics adopted in standard semantic theories such as [14] are illustrated in Fig. 1. Grammar (syntax and semantics) specifies all the distinct disambiguated interpretations of an ambiguous sentence like Kermit croaked,1 typically characterized by means of a DERIVATION TREE annotated with expressions in a DISAMBIGUATED LANGUAGE. The role of pragmatics is to filter those which are implausible and / or choose the preferred one. Theories of utterance processing that directly implement this view of the respective roles of semantics and pragmatics are confronted with the problem that the number of distinct disambiguated interpretations of any given sentence is in general very large—scopally ambiguous sentences such as (1), for example, might have n! readings, where n is the number of scope-taking operators. It's not clear how humans could be able to generate, let alone choose from, all these interpretations. 1I assume that the lexical item croak is semantically ambiguous between a property which is true of objects that utter frog-like sounds, and a property which is true of objects which died. (1) In most democratic countries most politicians can fool most of the people on almost every issue most of the time. [Lincoln; reported in [11].]

Pragmatics and the Lexicon

This contribution investigates the interactions between the (mental) lexicon and pragmatics. It aims to give an overview about pragmatic phenomena that are connected with the semantic underspecification of lexical items. Cases in point are the pragmatics of adjectives, effects of negative strengthening, systematic polysemy, the distribution of lexical and productive causatives, blocking phenome...

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

Lexical Pragmatics

Lexical Pragmatics is a research field that tries to give a systematic and explanatory account of pragmatic phenomena that are connected with the semantic underspecification of lexical items. Cases in point are the pragmatics of adjectives, systematic polysemy, the distribution of lexical and productive causatives, blocking phenomena, the interpretation of compounds, and many phenomena presentl...

Lexical Semantics and Pragmatics

In this paper I discuss some general problems one is confronted with when trying to analyze the utterance of words within concrete conceptual and contextual settings and to go beyond the aspects of meaning typically investigated by a contrastive analysis of lexemes within the Katz-Fodor tradition of semantics. After emphasizing some important consequences of the traditional view, several phenom...

The Semantics/Pragmatics Interface

We survey three domains – scalar implicatures, presupposition, and conventional implicatures – in which the division of labor between semantics and pragmatics has given rise to new empirical and formal insights in the last decade. In each case, there is a vibrant contemporary debate concerning the modular decomposition of rich arrays of data.
